Intima - latin for "innermost" or "most intimate"
This collection focuses on the intimate relationship between the wearer and the objects we choose to surround and adorn ourselves with.
Inspired by duality and paradox, these bags explore how materiality, form, and symbolism can be used to express how adornment
can become an extension of the self, revealing our innermost layers, both physical and emotional.
The materials and processes chosen express the desire to protect/conceal/repel while simultaenosly enticing the wearer to observe closer and reveal.
BAG 01
Castings -
Each bag features metal castings that surround the bag and the wearer in an unapproachable aura. They’re bone-like and intimidating, meant to be offputting in a way. The hardware of each bag in the collection takes on weapon-like forms hinting at our instinct to shield the vulnerable parts of ourselves and be cautious of how others perceive us. They’re the armor, the first layer you see and the hardest one to pass. I chose white bronze because it patinas heavily over time, especially in the places it is touched. So overtime as someone uses the bag, it will take on their presence and both product and user become reliant on eachother.
BAG 02
Engraving -
The abstract engraved designs are made by lasering the leather away to reveal a part of it we almost never see. Reminiscent of tattoos, they speak to a painful process that results in something deeply meaningful and boldly visible.
Leather & Suede -
I chose leather and suede because I wanted to accentuate the beauty of texture. By using the back of the leather to act as the suede, you are seeing to underside of skin that’s usually hidden away. Even though both materials are black, the variation in how they appeal to the 5 senses makes them stand out alongside each other.
BAG 03
Red Silk -
The red silk lining is the final layer of the bags. The luxurious color and feel of the material reflect both physical and emotional definitions of our innermost layer symbolizing flesh, blood, rage, love, and desire.
